Hans Richter made a hugely important contribution to musical life in Britain. He conducted Wagner at the Bayreuth Festival, and was in charge of the first Ring cycle performances in 1876,
In Britain, Richter spent many years conducting the Hallé in Manchester. He was particularly influential in his support for Elgar, conducting the first performances of several of his major works.
