New Zealand mezzo-soprano.

Patricia Payne was a winner of the International Vocal Concours at s'Hertogenbosch (Holland) in 1972, after which she performed in Holland, Belgium, Germany, Spain and Denmark.

She joined the Royal Opera at Covent Garden in 1974, making her debut as Schwertleite (Die Walküre) and appearances in Elektra and Die Frau ohne Schatten. Later roles with that company included Erda (Das Rheingold and Siegfried), First Norn (Götterdämmerung), Geneviève (Pelléas et Mélisande), Ulrica (Un ballo in maschera) and Mrs Sedley (Peter Grimes).

Other appearances in Britain included ENO (The Bartered Bride) and Opera North (Azucena, Clarice Love for Three Oranges).  She appeared at the 1989 Edinburgh Festival with Opera North as Clarice.

Her only role with Scottish Opera was Azucena in 1986.

Notable appearances at the world's major opera houses included tbe Bayreuth Festival (Die Walküre and Götterdämmerung), La Scala Milan (Un ballo in maschera), Teatro Comunale Florence (Götterdämmerung), San Franciscao (Das Rheingold, Die Walküre);   Metropolitan New York (La Cieca in La Gioconda)  and  Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona (La Cieca,  Erda Siegfried).
