A brief news item in the Dundee Evening Telegraph of Thursday, 7 September, announces that 'Mr Booth Hitchen, one of the principals of the Carl Rosa Opera Company, attributes his vocal powers to his athletic career.
''I have always been an athlete,'' he said. ''I was a professional footballer when 19 years of age in a Manchester League club.''
'Mr Hitchen added with a smile that although he captained a championship team when in Canada he did not make as much money as a professional footballer as he does as an opera star.'
