The Carl Rosa performed Lohengrin frequently in the last couple of decades of Victoria's reign, but since then had left it to Moody-Manners and O'Mara. This Lyceum visit, with the German-trained Charles Webber on the conducting staff, saw a major re-introduction of Wagner, with the first Wednesday and Thursday devoted to Mastersingers and Lohengrin, while the second Tuesday and Thursday were devoted to Tannhäuser and The Valkyrie.
OperaScotland holds casts for three, with a Lyceum programme for Mastersingers with Lohengrin and a second for Tales of Hoffmann (also conducted by Webber) with Tannhäuser.
The Glasgow performance, a Monday evening at the start of the visit's third week, has a cast taken from a programme in the Gardiner collection (Mitchell Library).
Unusually for Carl Rosa, there is a credit for costumes, though not for scenery.
Further tour dates to be confirmed.
