Michael Maurel studied in Italy and at the National School of Opera. He toured extensively with Opera for All before joining Sadler's Wells in 1962.
His debut at Covent Garden was as Schaunard in La bohème in 1969. The following year he returned to the Royal Opera House to create the role of Riccardo in Bennett's Victory, which toured to Berlin.
Maurel's first appearance with Scottish Opera was in 1964 as Masetto in Don Giovanni. He repeated that and sang two further Mozart roles, Figaro and Papageno. He sang three Britten parts with Scottish Opera, Sid in Albert Herring, Ned Keene in Peter Grimes and Demetrius. Other appearances included Rossini's Figaro, Frank in Die Fledermaus and Marcello.
