John Henry Thomas.
Active 1890s.
Welsh tenor.
Rhys Thomas spent several seasons touring with Carl Rosa, singing a lot of solo roles and several principal ones. His parts included Mozart (Don Basilio); Auber (Lorenzo Fra Diavolo, Juliano Black Domino); Meyerbeer (Tavannes Les Huguenots, Jonas Le Prophète); Donizetti (Nemorino, Tonio); Balfe (Florestein); Wagner (Baroncelli Rienzi; Walther Tannhäuser); Verdi (Gaston, Cassio); Gounod (Tybalt); Bizet (Splendiano Djamileh, Haroun Djamileh; Remendado); Mascagni (Fritz Kobus).
While singing leading parts with the Carl Rosa, Rhys Thomas sang in a charity concert to raise funds for the restoration of St Mary's R C Cathedral, Broughton Street, Edinburgh. The work they performed was the Rossini Stabat Mater. This may well have been its Scottish premiere.
