Northern Irish baritone.
Ben McAteer studied chemistry at St Andrews University before training in London at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the National Opera Studio. He was a Samling Scholar and was runner-up in the 2012 Kathleen Ferrier Awards.
Roles with St Andrews Opera included Aeneas and Tarquinius. At the Guildhall he sang Count Almaviva, Des Grieux (Massenet's Le portrait de Manon), Remigio (Massenet's La Navarraise) and Mr Webb (European premiere of Ned Rorem's Our Town). Other appearances include Clonter Opera (Peter Hansel and Gretel), Opera Holland Park (Sharpless), Lyric Opera Ireland (Corcoran H M S Pinafore), NI Opera Belfast (Papageno).
In 2017 he made his debut with Welsh National Opera as Goryanchikov From the House of the Dead and Falke Die Fledermaus. His ENO debut in 2018, was as Mountararat Iolanthe.
He was one of Scottish Opera's Emerging Artists 2015/16 and appearances with the company include the Opera Highlights 2015 tour, Guglielmo and Pish-Tush. He created the role of James in The Devil Inside (MacRae 2016) and returned to sing Mozart's Figaro. Recent appearances include Don Alhambra The Gondoliers and King Paramount Utopia Limited.
He also has a rapidly developing concert career.
