Baritone, later tenor.
As happens with considerable frequency, Haigh Jackson began his solo career singing baritone roles, before discovering that the top of his range developed to the point where he could sing heroic tenor parts, including Wagner.
He started as a member of Robert Cunningham's short-lived company (founded at a time when Carl Rosa was obliged to cease operations for a few months). Later on, during the war, he sang leading tenor parts with Carl Rosa.
The Scotsman's review of his Tannhäuser performance in 1915 alludes to his previous experience working in Germany. Presumably he was there immediately prior to the outbreak of war, when, like several other British singers, he would have returned home.
