Born Heidingsfeld-am-Main, 27 August 1866.
Died Darmstadt, 1 September 1925.
German conductor.
Once a young member of the Bayreuth orchestra, Balling later conducted Tristan and the Ring there, becoming closely acquainted with the Wagner family.
For those at OperaScotland, Balling is best known for his major contribution to the Ring cycle put together by Denhof in 1910 and 1911, with a further selection of operas by Wagner, Gluck and Strauss, in 1912.
Balling later (1912-14) succeeded Hans Richter as conductor of the Hallé, an appointment that inevitably ended with the start of hostilities with Germany.
