William Berger trained in London at the Royal Academy of Music and was a member of the Young Singers Programme at English National Opera.

He made his professional operatic debut in Germany at the Göttingen Handel Festival as Ormonte in Partenope, returning for Mercurio (Atalanta) and Ercole (Admeto). He went on to work in Spain (the Liceu, Barcelona), Belgium (Vlaamse Opera) and Switzerland (Lucerne Festival).

With ENO his roles included Masetto, Fiorello, Javelinot (The Carmelites), Second Nazarene (Salome) and Novice's Friend (Billy Budd). Other appearances in Britain include Opera East (Don Giovanni), British Youth Opera (Papageno) and English Concert (Zebul in Jephtha).

His first appearance in Scotland was with the Göttingen production of Handel's Admeto at the Edinburgh Festival. He returned for several appearances with the Edinburgh-based Ludus Baroque, including Handel's Alexander's Feast, The Triumph of Time and Truth and Athalia.
