St Andrews Opera and the Byre Theatre mounted a new co-production of Britten’s searing chamber opera, first performed in 1946 with Kathleen Ferrier in the title role. The production was directed by Kally Lloyd-Jones, highly acclaimed for her recent production of Janacek’s Katya Kabanova for Scottish Opera, with sets designed by the well-known Glasgow artist Helen Wilson. The concept of the staging was to refer to the 1950s black and white cinematic world of Fellini and his contemporaries.
The roles in the drama were taken by six of the Music Centre’s most talented singers (Scott Brooks, Jonathan Ichikawa, Ben McAteer, Jennifer Murray, Annabel Phillips, Emma Rettie) while the roles of Male and Female Chorus were taken by postgraduate singers from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama’s Sir Alexander Gibson Opera School. The production was conducted by Michael Downes, with a professional orchestra in the pit.
