The Carl Rosa company was always on the lookout for promising new material from the Continent. In 1876, Ponchielli had at last hit the jackpot with his masterpiece, La gioconda, so it was an enterprising idea to go for this earlier work. It was also quite unusual for the company to launch a new production in Edinburgh.
