A very rare chance to hear this delightful comic hybrid, with excellent music either by Weber or by Mahler trying, not always entirely successfully, to imitate the style of Weber. And there were many familiar and welcome names among the cast. In those days the Festival rarely did opera in concert, and replaced the dialogue with a heavy-handed narration by Fritz Spiegl, which was almost rescued by Ian Wallace (a colleague of Erede's going back to the 1940s).
