The audience popularity of Tannhäuser is attested to by the fact that on this tour, with the company's finances in a distinctly rocky state, it was given twice in both Aberdeen and Dundee, including the Saturday matinee slot. The cast, as reported in the Dundee Advertiser, is of a distinctly lower calibre than the 1897 version - Rita Elandi, Philip Brozel, William Ludwig and conductor Richard Eckhold all having moved on, at least temporarily.
