After several Mozart productions, it was perhaps a surprise not to have had Idomeneo or Clemenza. But Gluck had been sadly neglected outside the central belt, and this version was generally successful, being very well suited to the intimacy of the building. It is only a pity that the Perth Festival hasn't tried more Gluck, but since the millennium they have abandoned mounting their own productions in favour of importing the excellent English Touring Opera, and that company has not done Gluck (and has not brought any of its generally admirable Handel stagings north).
