After the opera's premiere in 1990 there was a widespread feeling that the staging by Scottish Opera, highly effective though it might have been, was not an ideal representation of the work. Lee Blakely's production, with a cast of students, was rather less awkward, and he quickly confirmed his credentials as a Weir expert by directing Scottish Opera's excellent staging of A Night at the Chinese Opera.
