Fidelio, originally mounted with Elisabeth Söderström as the heroine, was about as naturalistic as it was possible to imagine, and was well cast. Most importantly, Carol Yahr would be brought back by Scottish Opera as both Sieglinde and Isolde. Nicholas Folwell , with a trenchantly delivered baritone, had already played Alberich in Scottish Opera's Rheingold - sadly the cycle was abandoned after Die Walküre.
Young Australian soprano Cheryl Barker had a successful career with Scottish Opera and ENO, while Christopher Ventris's career was more on the continent, in heavier parts such as Parsifal.
Glyndebourne Tour - 1990
This was the first visit of the Glyndebourne tour to Glasgow. The repertoire contained two classics and one novelty. Sir Michael Tippett's last opera, New Year, first seen in Houston, had received its British premiere at the Glyndebourne Festival in the summer and was now shown in other venues. Peter Hall's staging of Fidelio was set firmly in the time of composition. The Peter Sellars take on The Magic Flute was rather different.
