This concert performance at the Edinburgh International Festival was dedicated to the memory of Sir Charles Mackerras, who was originally scheduled to conduct the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Chorus. Roger Norrington replaced him with great success, producing an appropriate approximation to a period style from his modern-instrument players.
Most of the singers also performed with great immediacy. The women were especially good, with Joyce DiDonato in particular transcending the difficulties imposed by the straitjacket of a concert performance. Emma Bell made an impressive Scottish debut, and Rosemary Joshua, returning after a long absence, sang quite beautifully as Ilia.
