Albert Herring 1968Scottish Opera

Scottish Opera made its first trip abroad to the Florence May Festival, playing in the historic Pergola Theatre. Earlier events at the Festival had been received without enthusiasm, so the positive reaction to Scottish Opera was very welcome.

The SNO players had not been available, so freelance musicians from London were recruited, with mixed results.  In all other respects, however, the production travelled well.  In an age long before the invention of supertitles, Anthony Besch redirected his staging with a slightly broader style, to help non-English speakers in the audience.

The following year, Albert Herring was toured to Hanover, Dortmund and Augsburg. In 1970 it went to Reykjavik (by which time an effective staging of Turn of the Screw could go too).
