Götterdämmerung 1968Scottish Opera

The third instalment of Scottish Opera's Ring was greeted with general enthusiasm, as the various elements which had not quite gelled in the previous two evenings now worked with greater consistency.

For Charles Craig, having sung Siegmund in 1966, moving on to Siegfried was a natural progression.  His performances were quite successful.  However he decided not to sing the complete role.  He did not speak German and had to learn his roles phonetically.  This was difficult enough for Siegmund, the Götterdämmerung Siegfried, and two shorter German roles he went on to learn, Florestan for Scottish Opera and Aegisth for Covent Garden.  The role of Siegfried in Siegfried is a longer part and he decided he did not want to do it.

These five performances marked the British debut of Helga Dernesch, who would be one of the more important singers to appear regularly with the company over the next few years.  Another debutant, who went on to an even greater career as a Wagnerian, sadly did not return regularly to the company. Mounting this Wagner work and Boris Godunov in the same season required the company to recruit some extra chorus members, and one of these was a young bass, still a student,  called John Tomlinson.
