As with the previous year's pairing, Glyndebourne gave nine performances each of two operas. This time, both were by Mozart, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte. The Don Giovanni staging was a revival of the Glyndebourne production originally mounted in 1936.
Rafael Kubelik had only recently moved from Czechoslovakia to live in the west, though his name was familiar, if only because his father, Jan Kubelik, had been a violin virtuoso who toured widely in Britain before the war. He was in charge at Covent Garden for a few years in the late fifties, but spent most of his subsequent career in Germany. He was able to return to the liberated Czech Republic shortly before his death.
