Opera for Europe was the performing arm of the European Opera Centre - an institution intended to provide valuable training for young professionals. This enterprising tour began at Buxton on 14 February and continued through to May, giving one and occasionally more performances in several towns in Britain and Ireland for whom the opera must have been completely unknown. In that context, it is a pity that these were the only performances in Scotland. This was a group of young singers showing off their talents in the challenges presented by Mozart's youthful opera seria, here receiving its belated Scottish premiere. They must have gained immeasurably from the canny advice of the great mezzo Brigitte Fassbaender - whether her skills as a stage director were equal to this difficult piece is perhaps less certain.
The tour was double cast.
