The BBC SSO performed Act I of this masterwork, spreading the great work over a trilogy of concerts during the season commemorating the bcentenary of Wagner's birth (22 May 1813). Of the quartet of stars, three were making first appearances in Scotland, while Ian Storey, long a favourite here, is now in demand all over the world. By taking the work one act at a time, Runnicles is able to give his orchestra the thorough grounding required to play this score which was largely unfamiliar to them.
An interesting addition to the programme was the distinctly meaty hors d'oeuvre consisting of Rachmaninov's tone poem The Isle of the Dead - just the thing to get you in the right mood.
