The Carl Rosa company tried several times to follow up on the huge popular success of Faust, Carmen and Mignon, but nothing else by Thomas or other French composers had the same impact. The radical adaptation of this piece provided by William Beatty Kingston converted Shakespeare into Pedro Valdez, Sir John Falstaff into Don Federigo de Pardan, and Queen Elizabeth into Duchess Erminia - all to no avail, though it was admitted that the work contained a good deal of attractive music.
The cast is drawn from a programme pserved in Edinburgh Central Library for the matinee performance in the Lyceum dated 26 February.
