The 2008 Festival took as its theme the idea of the changes in Europe in recent decades, with the collapse of apparently secure political regimes and styles of government. The opening concert performance - a work from between the wars, created by two Germans taking a rather jaundiced view of America several years before they took refuge in that country - typified the uncompromising attitude this theme entailed. Sadly, Mahagonny is not a piece that plays itself, and it really does need to be steered by someone with a bit of rehearsal time, which does not seem to have been available on this occasion.
