This remarkable large-scale oratorio provided an exciting opening concert at the Edinburgh Festival of 2010. Given the general theme chosen that year - Oceans Apart - with its exploration of many cultures of the Pacific Rim, a Californian work with its roots in Hispanic and Latin American cultures could hardly have been more appropriate. Substantial choral forces combined under one of the leading American conductors (a regular in Scotland back in the eighties, but long absent) with an interesting blend of soloists.
