The first performance of La traviata in Scotland was given on February 20, 1857 as part of a tour of the provinces given by the Grand Italian Opera Company. Read more about it here. For many years, it was common for the best singers in London - international stars many of them - to embark on a two- or three- month UK tour to cities such as Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dublin, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Bath, Newcastle and others.
The cast for the first Edinburgh performance on 25 Februuary is as advertised in the Caledonian Mercury.
La traviata in particular attracted great criticism from established churches on grounds of its morals, though Verdi and others expected - and received - complaints regarding the attitudes to social class expressed in the opera.
