Elephant Angel turned out to be a touching and enjoyable stage work of under an hour's duration, for a small chamber ensemble of seven, accompanying two professional singers, who worked with a group of five young singers from Scottish Opera's Connect Youth programme (aged 17 to 21). This nucleus of performers travelled the country and spent each day working with a band of some 60 children from a local primary school, 30 of whom contributed a series of choruses, including traditional sounding street songs. The others worked on backstage activities, including marketing. The cunningly-designed animal masks were hugely attractive. A thoroughly diverting piece, which the kids had clearly enjoyed working on.
