Composer.

Gareth Williams comes originally from County Armagh, and moved to Glasgow after studying music at Queen's University, Belfast. In 2008 he completed his PhD in Composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, studying with Gordon MacPherson. He combined teaching with composing for a period.

In November 2011 Scottish Opera announced his appointment as composer in residence, a post lasting for two years and allowing him to develop as a composer. Gareth worked on a number of projects including a community and schools opera, a duet to feature in the Opera Highlights tour in January 2012, a chamber opera to tour Scotland in Autumn 2012, and a pilot project to develop an evidence-based music therapy programme.

His previous operatic work includes two short pieces for Scottish Opera's Five:15 - Operas Made in Scotland, and he worked with NOISE to create the Sloans Project, an opera based in the Glasgow landmark, and inspired by stories from the past. It was performed in Sloans, conducted by Gareth and the action shifted through various handsome rooms in that well known hostelry.
