There was no great sign of Rustic Chivalry losing popularity. These outings show differing attitudes to its pairing however. In spring, the company tried a very unusual curtain raiser, in Gluck's Orfeo. The Glasgow performance on 25 April was in fact a late substitute for Donizetti's Daughter of the Regiment - the company did not field a substitute Marie if Zélie de Lussan was ill, but changed the programme completely. By the autumn in Glasgow Cav was at last teamed up with Pagliacci, though it was Leoncavallo's less familiar piece that came first.
