Handel's wonderful masque, full of fresh melodies, was here presented, in concert, in an unusual version as adapted by Mendelssohn. Nothing particularly shocking in its treatment - after all, we are used to Messiah as re-orchestrated by various hands including Mozart, various Victorians and Eugene Goossens (under the influence of Beecham) - all generally swept away by the drive for authenticity. Mendelssohn's version seems entirely valid, and this performance was a worthwhile experiment. A pity that the original is so rarely heard in Scotland.
