Nozze di Figaro 1980Scottish Opera

Read more about the opera Marriage of Figaro

Toby Robertson's Figaro staging had started as a medium-scale touring venture, and had received many performances around the country. Here it was given a final group of outings at the Theatre Royal in Italian with an international cast. Fortunately that meant several top-notch Scottish performers were in the team, most obviously Margaret Marshall and Marie McLaughlin as Countess and Susanna. John Robertson was always an excellent characterful but not overdone Basilio. Cynthia Buchia seemed a tiny child rather than gawky adolescent as Cherubino, but very effective.

The incomers included Richard Van Allan, whose only previous visit to Scottish Opera had been two performances of Bartolo a decade earlier. The Swedish baritone and Italian bass, both popular favourites at Glyndebourne, had not performed in Scotland before, and, sadly, would not come back.

Addiitional dates to be entered.
