This difficult piece received its fourth performance in Dundee at the hands of the Choral Union. If the soloists were rather less exalted than the teams that had performed it in the past, the orchestra and chorus were still excellent, and the entire performance was thoroughly enjoyable.
The excellent Scottish Philharmonia was not the expanded form of the SCO that had often played for Scottish Opera a decade earlier. It was, rather, a band of apparently freelance professionals, who, inspection of the programme revealed, were familiar names from the SNO, or, if unfamiliar, were perhaps from the BBC Scottish.
