Berlioz's epic telling of the Faust story is still something of a rarity in Scotland, and when it does appear, it is invariably in concert form. Stéphane Denève's years with the RSNO allowed us to hear a deal of little known French music, usually with top-notch soloists. Even so, it was rare for a vocal work to be taken outside the central belt, There is no doubt as to the quality of these singers, who would usually only visit Scotland for the Edinburgh Festival. It must be said that in Perth's intimate new concert hall the sound could sometimes be overwhelming.
