This was a concert performance at the Edinburgh Festival. Sir Charles here used the Hanover Band to extend his search for historically informed performance practice to the bel canto era. Perhaps the most unusual element is the tenor of Bruce Ford, more familiar in Rossinian flights than in the darker tones of this dramatic Donizetti role. The soundworld of the entire performance was refreshingly different, as can be heard on the studio recording made the previous week in London.
