Il flauto magico was by no means a repertoire piece to the extent it is now, and was considered very difficult. Mapleson's was the only British company to risk touring it. The team of singers here, on the female side at least, is amazing, It is certainly surprising to see that Valleria appears to have doubled as First Lady and Papagena. 

The Sarastro was an American bass, Giulio Perkins. He had married the prima donna Marie Roze a few months earlier, but would die early in the following year.
