The was the final run of Martin Duncan's staging, which had generally pleased on its first appearance (dominated by Simon Keenlyside's magnetic Papageno), but didn't impress so much on revival. Nor had it succeeded when borrowed by Covent Garden. In spite of excellent conducting from Richard Farnes, this revival was uneven in quality, with some excellent performers, but a lack of balance.
