The suitability of this darkly serious work for Christmas entertainment must remain debatable. This time the month of December was occupied by ten performances. The company did a couple in Glasgow before migrating to Edinburgh for a week, then back to Glasgow for the last five.
What might have been a routine revival of Mark Tinkler's production was distinguished first of all by the enthusiastic conducting of Richard Armstrong. The cast featured an excellent Witch by Anne-Marie Owens, with Phyllis Cannan (returning to Scottish Opera after a very long gap) as the children's mother, and Leah-Marian Jones a particularly good Hansel. The production had also been worked on and seemed more fluent than before - a pity it wasn't seen again.
