For a few years after Scottish Opera found it uneconomic to visit this small theatre, the Perth Festival tried mounting its own productions. Inevitably these were predominantly favourite works of Mozart, though Gluck and Britten were performed too. The same problem was encountered, however - no matter how simple the designs or small the cast, the economics of mounting a production from scratch for a handful of performances became increasingly challenging.
This traditional staging was quite successful. With Perth Rep's own design and lighting team on hand costs were here trimmed to the bone. This production was clearly cheaper to mount than the previous Figaro, but then neither did it have singers of the promise of Anthony Michaels-Moore.
