Haydn's final oratorio had featured previously in the programmes of Dundee Choral Union over the years. The first performance was as long ago as June 1865, and to the end of that century it was subsequently heard in 1871 and 1898. Performances were less frequent in the twentieth century. The work was clearly under-appreciatiated, and appeared only in 1964 and 1986. The overall quality of this concert certainly justified the revival.
