Smetana's comedy was comparatively little known at this stage.  Indeed this English translation was clearly derived from the German version then current with hero and heroine called Hans and Marie,  with other characters renamed Wenzel,  Agnes,  Kathinka,  etc.   Never mind - it is likely that the most important influence on performance quality will have come from Barbirolli in the pit.
