Tayside had not previously attempted Lucia, but, with Mary Timmons and Alan Borthwick having teamed up in previous Verdi productions, it was a logical choice to move on to Donizetti's Scottish opera. They tackled the work with great seriousness of purpose, which stretched to opening out all the standard cuts, something even Scottish Opera had not yet attempted. The Wolf's Crag slanging match for tenor and baritone duly made its powerful effect, and Donizetti's masterly composition of the last act, of which the infamous mad scene is only a part, came over strongly.
