Amahl is an enjoyable little work, entirely suitable for amateur companies. Tayside here experimented with a second, small-scale presentation as a cheaper project between the companies two 'grand' productions, Lucia in spring 1980 and Ernani in autumn 1981. It was paired with an equally attractive work from earlier in the century, Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, which featured the company's leading principals.
