Menotti's fun two-hander was designed as a curtain raiser for The Medium. However there are other partnerings that can work, and in this case it was the twentieth century representative in a triple-bill that began in the eighteenth with Pergolesi's Serva Padrona and ended in the nineteenth with Donizetti's farcical Campanello di Notte.
