Jean-Pierre Ponnelle directed a cycle of the great Mozart operas in Cologne. His staging of Così fan tutte also became a fixture in many of the world’s great houses in the 1970s. The productions were always stylish, and the comedies invariably witty, though sometimes the serious side in this piece was underplayed. The Così production was a pretty rococo affair in black and white throughout. Musically, this cast under Pritchard’s genial direction, was hard to fault.
