Dido and Aeneas 2016St Magnus Festival

Read more about the opera Dido and Aeneas

A story of love, loss and magic, the opera tells of Dido’s marriage to Aeneas, the wicked plotting of a sorceress to destroy this bond and Aeneas’s departure leaving Dido bereft and with death as her only option. It is filled with beautiful and memorable music including the exquisite When I am laid in earth. Only performed once in Purcell’s lifetime, this work has become a model for many chamber operas since, and in the absence of the composer’s original score has been arranged and realised by many musicians most notably Benjamin Britten. For these performances, Ashley Solomon will bring his own interpretation to the orchestral arrangement.
