Edinburgh Choral Union, a huge body of singers, here assembled an excellent team for Gerontius. Conductor Christopher Seaman was in charge of the BBC SSO at this stage and had an instinctive rapport with the music of Elgar. That his career developed largely in the USA was very much our loss.
Kenneth Bowen sang rather more in concert than opera, but enjoyed an excellent reputation. However Sandra Browne had recently had a great success in the Ledlanet staging of Idomeneo and was building an excellent career that included Carmen and Octavian at ENO. Richard Angas's long career was well underway, and in Scotland he had already worked with Scottish Opera as well as Ledlanet.
