This was the first staging in Britain of a great rarity by Delius, not previously highly regarded.
The intention was that this production would be a one off run, never to be revived. However the staging was simple but excellent, beautifully designed and lit, and the opera itself turned out to have some wonderful music which held together quite well. It seemed entirely possible that this opera could be performed more often. However this particular staging was not revived, despite the obvious dedication of all involved. There seemed to be a view that the performances flattered the work - but isn't that just what a good performance should do?
