Only two years after the Royal Opera brought Macbeth to the Festival Theatre (strangely in concert format), Scottish Opera here brought their second staging to the Festival. Richard Armstrong was an idiomatic Verdian and the singing was excellent. Controversy revolved round the expensive and impressive sets and costumes - the production looked and sounded impressive,
After the three Festival performances the production was rested until the spring of 2000, when it was seen in the Glasgow season and abroad.
