Over several years, Charles Mackerras conducted the SCO with excellent teams of soloists in concert performances of the major Mozart operas. These were usually tied in with studio recordings. While the general style showed awareness of period style, modern instruments were used along with the big voices expected. As in the original performances of 1787 (and Carl Rosa in the 1950s) the parts of Commendatore and Masetto were taken by the same singer, in this case Umberto Chiummo.
